Scoring Issues

If your product scores don't look right, the per-dimension breakdown is your best diagnostic tool. Here are the most common scoring issues and how to resolve them.

All products have the same score

Symptoms: Every product in your catalog shows the same or very similar AI readiness score.

Likely cause: A catalog-wide data gap affecting all products equally.

Solution:

  1. Open any product's detail page and check the per-dimension breakdown
  2. Look for dimensions where all products score the same — that's the gap
  3. Common catalog-wide gaps:
    • Product Identifiers — No GTIN/UPC on any product (all score 0 or 30 on this dimension)
    • Category Taxonomy — No Shopify Standard Product Category set on any product
    • Image alt text — No alt text on any product images

Fix the gap across your catalog in Shopify admin, then re-sync to see differentiated scores.

Score lower than expected

Symptoms: A product you think should score well is getting a moderate or poor score.

Solution:

  1. Open the product detail page in Vantage
  2. Check each dimension's individual score — the per-dimension breakdown shows exactly where points were lost
  3. Common blind spots merchants miss:
    • Alt text on images — Often overlooked, affects Image Quality (8.9%)
    • Product identifiers — GTIN/UPC not entered in the barcode field (13.3%)
    • Shopify product category — Not set or set too broadly (11.1%)
    • Thin descriptions — Under 50 words or lacking factual content (16.7%)
    • Missing brand in title — Vendor name not included in the product title (part of 16.7%)
💡
Tip

Focus on the three highest-weight dimensions first: Title Quality, Description Quality, and Attribute Completeness (each 16.7%). Improving these gives you the biggest score lift for the least effort.

Category not detected correctly

Symptoms: The product is being scored against the wrong category's attribute checklist, or the category shows as "generic."

Solution:

Vantage determines product category from multiple signals. To improve detection:

  1. Set the Shopify Standard Product Category — In Shopify admin, edit the product and select the most specific category from Shopify's taxonomy dropdown
  2. Set the product type — Fill in the Product type field with an accurate product type
  3. Add relevant tags — Tags like "electronics," "apparel," or "food" help category detection

The six specialized categories Vantage recognizes are:

  • Apparel & Accessories
  • Electronics & Technology
  • Health & Beauty
  • Home & Garden
  • Food & Beverage
  • Sports & Outdoors

Products not matching any specialized category use the generic fallback with universal attributes.

Score not updating after making changes

Symptoms: You updated product data in Shopify but the score in Vantage hasn't changed.

Cause: Scores are recalculated only during a catalog sync, not in real time.

Solution:

  1. Make your changes in Shopify admin
  2. Return to Vantage and trigger a re-sync from the dashboard or Settings page
  3. Wait for the sync to complete — scores will be updated automatically
ℹ️
Note

Vantage does not monitor Shopify for changes in real time (webhook-based detection is planned for a future release). You need to trigger a sync after making changes to see updated scores.

Score changed unexpectedly

Symptoms: A product's score changed without you making any edits.

Possible causes:

  • Another team member edited the product in Shopify admin
  • Another app modified product data (description, metafields, etc.)
  • Shopify updated category taxonomy definitions

Check the product's edit history in Shopify admin to see if any changes were made since the last sync.

Dimension score seems wrong for a specific product

Symptoms: One dimension's score doesn't match what you see in the product data.

Solution:

  1. Open the product in Shopify admin and verify the raw data matches what you expect
  2. Check that data is in the correct fields — information in the description doesn't count the same as information in dedicated fields (metafields, variant options)
  3. Re-sync to ensure Vantage has the latest data

If the score still seems incorrect after verifying the data and re-syncing, contact support with the product URL and the specific dimension in question.
